Preikestolen Sunrise Hike

On an annual basis, Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) welcomes more visitors than any other trekking-destination in Norway. In 2018, more than 300,000 hikers made their way up to the top of the imposing cliff that hangs 604 meters above the Lysefjord. From atop nature’s ‘pulpit’, the panoramic views of the Lysefjord are some of the most dramatic scenery Fjord-Norway has to offer.   Outdoorlife Norway invites you to experience a unique Preikestolen hiking adventure, guaranteed to be crowd-free! While the vast majority of visitors hike to Preikestolen along the main trail during daytime hours, our signature sunrise hike allows guests to experience the beauty of the Lysefjord in near-solitude. Hike to Preikestolen during twilight hours and catch the sun rising over the Lysefjord before the crowds of tourists have even begun to make their way up the trail and then enjoy breakfast / lunch at Preikestolen Mountain Lodge, which is located at the base of the hiking trail.   After a VERY early-morning pick-up (for times, please see ‘Duration & Pick-up Information’ tab, above), your adventure will begin with a 40-minute ferry ride across an urban fjord. With a hot cup of coffee in hand, you’ll have ample time to wake up while viewing Stavanger’s waterfront from the water. Once ashore, your guide will transport you further to the base of the hiking trail. After a short briefing, you’ll embark on your journey to Preikestolen. You’ll begin your outdoor adventure in darkness, hiking with headlamps on trails that have recently been upgraded by Nepalese Sherpas. Hiking in the hushed silence of night is in itself an experience. Though animals are shy around people, it’s a certainty that they’ll be awake and alert, observing you from behind the old trees and scattered boulders that surround the trail. While the wildlife watches, your guide will lead you up through the shifting terrain, which includes bogs, forests, and glacier-scoured mountains.   After approximately 2.5 hours of hiking, you’ll reach the Preikestolen plateau just before sunrise. After finding yourself a comfortable place to relax, you’ll watch as the first beams of sunlight climb over the horizon and illuminate the Lysefjord’s steep mountain walls. While relaxing, you’ll have ample time to take photos and enjoy a warm beverage and snack atop Preikestolen. Long before the first tourist-packed busses arrive from Stavanger, you’ll be on your way back down the trail to conclude your unique hiking adventure with a well-deserved breakfast / lunch at Preikestolen Mountain Lodge.   MODERATE DIFFICULTY – Suitable for people of most ages – excluding children younger than 8 yrs. – who are in general good condition, and have previous hiking experience.

Preikestolen hike - off the beaten track

On an annual basis, Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) greets more visitors than any other trekking-destination in Fjord Norway. In 2018, more than 300,000 hikers made their way up to the imposing cliff, which hangs 604 meters over the Lysefjord. From atop nature’s ‘pulpit’, guests enjoy panoramic views of some of the most dramatic scenery Norway has to offer.   Outdoorlife Norway invites you to avoid the crowds by joining our guides on an ‘off the beaten track’ Preikestolen hiking adventure.  Hike in near-solitude through the area’s backcountry while encountering out-of-this-world views of Preikestolen and the Lysefjord – which only few have seen.   After an early-morning pick-up, your adventure will begin with a 40-minute ferry ride across one of Stavanger’s urban fjords. Once ashore, your guide will transport you further to the base of the hiking trail. After a warm cup of coffee and an information and safety briefing, you’ll embark on your hiking adventure to Preikestolen. First, you’ll glide in a canoe across the peaceful Refsvatn Lake, which will take approximately 45-minutes.  Once you have your feet back on dry land, you’ll begin the hiking portion of the tour. During 70% of the hike, you’ll follow a backcountry, unmarked trail that is overgrown and has mostly been forgotten. Other than by Outdoorlife Norway’s guides, the trail is rarely used, and the cairns that lead the way through its dense forests are difficult to locate. Once you hike above the tree-line, the trail ceases to exist all together. The remaining 30% of the hike is therefore comprised of off-trail hiking & scrambling. During this portion of the hike, you’ll experience out-of-this-world and rarely-seen views of Preikestolen and the Lysefjord. Along the way, your guide will find a comfortable spot to take a lunch break.  After lunch and approximately 3,5 hours on foot, you’ll reach a location that offers panoramic views of Preikestolen that the majority of people only get to see in tourist brochures. After a short break to ensure you’re able to capture great photos of the Pulpit Rock, you’ll hike down to Preikestolen and experience standing atop the impressive plateau, which towers 604 meters above sea level. There, you’ll get to view the 1000 meter-high mountain walls surrounding the 42-kilometer-long Lysefjord from a new perspective. After the break, you’ll begin the long descent back to civilization, which will take approximately 2 hours. Your guide will lead you back to your starting point by following the main trail. Along the way, you’ll walk on paths that have were paved, using locally-sourced stones, by Nepalese sherpas. If the members of your group still have energy to burn, your guide may instead navigate along another off-map trail, where you’ll be able to enjoy the remainder of the hike in near-solitude while you take in the beauty of the Norwegian wilderness from ever-changing perspectives. Once back at the trailhead, your guide will transport you back to Stavanger.

Travel at high-speed (30 knots-55km/hour) on a ridged inflatable boat (RIB) from the quay in Stavanger, through the Lysefjord, and on to the former power plant village of Flørli. Take the long climb up 4,444 steps to the top of the mountainside and take in the spectacular fjord views. Flørli, which has been inhabited on and off since at least the seventeenth century, is beautifully located amidst 1000-meter-high mountains along the southern shore of the Lysefjord.  In 1916, construction began on a hydro-electric power plant, which, from 1918 until 1950, supplied electricity to the city of Stavanger. At its peak (1917), 142 people were employed at the plant; quite an impressive number considering that only 13 permanent residences were ever built near the site. This is a demanding 2.5-hour, ~3.2 km (round-trip) climb/hike with a total ascent of just over 750 meters.

Kjerag Autumn Hike

Fjord cruise included!* Join Outdoorlife Norway on an autumn hike to Kjerag, and witness the magic of the season’s shifting colors and Norway’s crisp and cool mountain air. Hike on trails that have recently been upgraded by Nepalese Sherpas, who used local stones and made overcoming the final (and steepest) slope a little easier. Though the hike to Kjerag is filled with breath-taking views of the Lysefjord, the trip’s highlight for many is standing atop Kjerag’s famous boulder. Your journey begins when your professional guide picks you up in Stavanger city-center (see above for specific pick-up times and locations). While being transported to the hiking trail, which takes about 2.5 hours, you’ll pass through a variety of dramatic landscapes including mountains, fjords, and bright green valleys. The guide will navigate over a mountain pass through the municipality of Sirdal. You’ll pass through a barren, glacier scoured landscape that many experience as being moon-like. You’ll begin your hike at a trail-head that’s known as the Eagle’s Nest – which one can speculate got its name because it sits a lofty 640 meters above sea level. During Autumn, weather conditions can be unstable. As needed, the guide will adjust your equipment (ice spikes, etc.) to match the weather conditions. The hike to Kjerag is relatively demanding: you’ll trek 11 kilometers (round-trip) with an ascent of 800 meters in 5.5 kilometer. During the 2.5-hour hike to the boulder, you’ll encounter 3 periods of steep climbing interspersed with 2 shallow valleys. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of the village of Lysebotn, which is situated at the head of the Lysefjord. The final 2 kilometers leading up to the Kjerag boulder are relatively flat and will allow you to focus more on Norway’s beautiful wilderness. Once you reach the edge of the mountain’s plateau, while standing on a 1000-meter-high cliff, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the 42-kilometer-long Lysefjord. Cliff-side, you’ll have plenty of time to rest and enjoy your packed lunch. If you’re among the brave, you’ll have the opportunity to stand atop the Kjerag boulder. After the lunch break, your guide will lead you back down to the Eagle’s Nest, which takes about 2 hours. After the hike, you’ll be driven through 26 hairpin turns along the (one and only!) road to the village of Lysebotn at the head of the Lysefjord. Here, you’ll board a speed-ferry.* The ferry will set-off navigating under steep mountain walls towering hundreds of meters above the fjord. The cruise will transport you further out the Lysefjord where you will pass waterfalls, abandoned farms, and the famous Preikestolen cliff, which towers 604 meters above sea-level. *On Saturdays, and between Oct 15 – 19, the speed ferry does not run and we will drive around the mountains.
